I have posted a draft of the main article explaining this site, www. is not deprecated, and a tutorial on how to implement redirection in Apache.

  1. First, they don’t understand why the http://www. is (or isn’t) there, and second, they don’t understand that the Web is not the whole of the Internet.

That’s just bullshit, you could just as well use those arguments to evangelize no-www.

The main reason I argue for leaving the http://www. in URLs is that it serves as a gentle reminder that there are other services than the Web on the Internet. Some of these, such as FTP and DNS, users typically use transparently without even realizing it. Others, such as e-mail, users access through separate applications. Even so, I know of many users who will claim with a straight face that e-mail is not part of the Internet.

It’s interesting you’re naming FTP as an example of other services than the Web on the Internet. Dude, have you ever heard of protocol schemes?

  2. I agree with Mathias. Pure BS. You’re arguing for making the user interfaces on top of the web completely non-intuitive and technically challenging for the majority of users, rather than intuitive and obvious. No web designer with sense will support you. See my comment on the page you wrote.

In short: Making users understand is bad, understanding users is good.

  3. I agree, but disagree. Making users understand is good, and understanding users is good too.

Really, all that matters is that it makes the average user even less intellegent then they already are. For example my Computer Literacy teacher (we learn about viruses! = 0 ) taught us that http://www. is the protocol of the internet and mail. is a new protocol that she had just recently learned of. She also taught us that http://securityresponse.symantec.com/ was most likely made by hax0z to trick us! = 0 I can’t believe how intellegent she is.

This is my example of what happens to users who have an extreme lack of intellegence.
